With Charlton being struggling newcomers to the Women’s Super League and Chelsea Women looking to pad their goal difference early into the season, one could only expect a ton of goals coming our way at the Valley. And the goals poured in almost as if we had an empty goal in front of us.
At minute 19 we were four goals in front of the hosts, with Melvine Malard scoring twice, Nathalie Björn opening the account three minutes into the match, and Ellie Carpenter getting herself in the scoreboard in between.
It would have been 5-0 a couple of minutes later but a weird offside call took the first half hat-trick away from Malard.
Taking our foot off the gas pedal was a natural development. Players aren’t made of steel and this month’s schedule is rough, with five games to be played in a two-week stretch beginning next weekend. Unfortunately we still had to see Lauren James come off injured in the first half, with captain Erin Cuthbert filling in.
Four goals were enough to leave most Chelsea fans satisfied with the match. We ended up adding two in the second half for good measure, with Aggie Beever-Jones and Giulia Dragoni — the latter scoring her first ever goal for the club — getting in the mix.
Carefree!
- Sjoeke Nüsken in central midfield, since young Lexi Potter is out injured.
- 15 shots on goal, seven of which on target, up until the 23rd minute of the match.
- Get well soon, Lauren!
- Next up: Everton at home in the Women’s Super League.
- KTBFFH!
