Bayern Munich and attacker Serge Gnabry have been expected to be heading toward a contract extension for weeks now, but a report from Kicker journalists Georg Holzner and Frank Linkesch (as captured by
@iMiaSanMia) indicates that not everyone at the club is fully onboard yet with giving Gnabry a new deal:
A part of the club’s leadership still wants to wait before offering Serge Gnabry a new deal. However, the sporting management (Eberl, Freund) is in favour of a quick extension. And since the sporting management can finalize deals under €50m without the green light of the supervisory board, things could move quickly and Gnabry could sign a new contract soon. That would be feasible with a performance based two-year contract at a slightly reduced salary.
BFW Commentary
The prospect of this deal falling through could be a good thing in the minds of some fans, but it feels like if the financial parameters are correct, the contract extension will get done. Right now, Gnabry’s total pay (salary+ bonus) is €23.5 million, so the big question is on just how low Gnabry will go for a pay cut. €8 million? €10 million? €12 million?
That is is where Gnabry’s decision will come into play. Per this report, it seems like that the final number will be important for some folk in the club’s leadership structure as well. If you want a guess at who might be object, it could be the people on the supervisory board — but that is just a guess.
