Newcastle United travels to Selhurst Park on Sunday for its Premier League Matchday 8 game against Crystal Palace.
Matthias Jaissle’s side enters the match following consecutive league defeats, losing 4-1 at Coventry City before suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa last weekend. Newcastle has collected eight points from its opening seven matches and sits 11th in the table.
The Magpies have struggled defensively, to say the least, conceding in six consecutive Premier League matches and going 13
league games without a clean sheet dating back to last season. Newcastle has also lost its last two away fixtures, although it has scored in four consecutive road matches.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, enters the weekend 14th with seven points from seven league matches. Pierre Sage’s side is winless in its last three Premier League games and suffered a 5-0 defeat to Brighton before drawing 2-2 with Besiktas in the Europa League on Thursday.
Palace has conceded 17 goals in seven league fixtures but remains unbeaten in its last two home matches, while Newcastle has not won at Selhurst Park since November 2020.

On Elanga and Ramsey’s progression…
“Anthony has trained this week and worked really hard. He won’t be able to play 90 minutes but he is hopefully ready, at least, to be able to join the squad.
‘I am happy Jacob Ramsey is back on the pitch. We need to take it step-by-step with him, manage his load management, we don’t want to take too many risks.
“I am pleased that slowly we are getting the players back and the next question is the physical level.”
On preparation for Sunday’s clash…
“It was a week we were fully committed to what we want to develop. We found things we can do better clearly in the post match analysis and we have been working on themes.
“At Crystal Palace, we want to show another phase to get three points.”
On Sean Steur…
“We are all sure, the whole club, the coaching staff and the players what great potential Sean has. He has shown that already and he showed, like many other lads, there are ups and downs and this is normal.
“Now it is time he is getting that confidence, that maturity throughout training sessions, training weeks and we see it as a long-term project.
“Nico (González) is doing good in that position but that is the competition. We are happy with his progress.”
On the pressure on managing Newcastle…
“I have always said it is a privilege to be the coach of Newcastle United. It is not a great pressure, I would use another word. It is a great responsibility.
“There is a setback at the moment and we need to overcome it. The disappointment of the fans is part of the game. They are passionate, especially our supporters who are great.”
On facing Palace, who were held to a 2-2 draw against Beşiktaş in the Europa League on Thursday…
“There is always times where you would and wouldn’t like to play against an opposition. They have had a heavy defeat and then drew yesterday. They will want a reaction.
“We can only focus on ourselves, what we can control. We are fully focused on Crystal Palace, to deliver the match plan.”
