Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown has quickly emerged as a top transfer target for Bayern Munich this summer, especially in the wake of the German Rekordmeister having already lost out on Anthony Gordon and having stepped out of the race for Kennet Eichhorn. While a defender was never at the top of Bayern’s list for the summer transfer window, getting Brown from Frankfurt is an opportunity Vincent Kompany and Bayern’s front office does not want to pass up, all things considered.
Per information
from Sky Sport’s Florian Plettenberg, negotiations between Frankfurt and Bayern are positive right now. Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche and Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl are reportedly in regular contact with another regarding the move and discussions have gone positively thus far despite previous reports suggesting Bayern were unwilling to offer more than a little over €50m while Frankfurt were asking for at least €60m.
While Brown himself has said he’s fully focused on the World Cup with Germany right now, both Frankfurt and Bayern are remaining increasingly optimistic that a deal could be struck at some point, regardless of whether it’s before or after the start of the tournament. If a deal is struck relatively soon, it would be arranged for Brown to have his medical for the move done in the United States while he’s with the German squad for the World Cup. Their group stage matches are in Houston, Toronto, and then East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Going the other way, Frankfurt are close to agreeing a deal for Bayern’s Noël Aséko, who spent a loan spell at Hannover 96 in the 2. Bundesliga, though Frankfurt have made it clear that they do not want to involve the defensive midfielder in any sort of swap deal with Bayern for Brown. While funds from a potential Aséko sale could indirectly lessen the purchase of Brown, the two deals are seen as completely separate by both clubs.
Bayern’s heavy interest in Brown also raises question marks for the future of Alphonso Davies, but it remains to be seen what will happen with the Canadian international this summer. At one point in time, Kompany felt he could heavily rely on Davies to hold down the fort at the left back spot, but he’s had incredibly unfortunate injury luck this past season after recovering from his cruciate ligament tear last year. Things have obviously changed and Brown’s potential presence in the squad could bring about a tricky situation for Davies.
