Former Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna has reflected on the challenge of facing Cristiano Ronaldo during the 2016 Champions League semi-final, describing the Portuguese forward as a uniquely complete and unpredictable opponent.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Managing Madrid, Sagna pointed to Ronaldo’s efficiency in front of goal as the defining trait that made defending him particularly difficult.
“Cristiano Ronaldo’s biggest threat was how clinical he was,” Sagna said. “His ability
to shoot from distance, the danger from crosses and how easily he got away from defenders made him the complete forward.”
Sagna emphasized that Ronaldo’s physical attributes added another layer to the problem. His aerial ability, in particular, stood out.
“His height and athleticism gave him a big advantage in the air; we’ve all seen the goals he can score with his head by towering above defenders.”
For Manchester City’s back line, discipline was essential — especially around the penalty area.
“We knew we had to be careful and avoid giving fouls around the box, because there was a good chance Ronaldo would score the freekick,” Sagna explained.
Beyond specific qualities, Sagna highlighted Ronaldo’s unpredictability as a constant concern.
“Regardless of how he received the ball — whether it was from a cross or with his back to goal — he could always produce something special and out of the ordinary,” he said. “You never knew what he would come up with.”
Sagna also contrasted Ronaldo with Gareth Bale, who posed a different type of threat in the same tie.
“Gareth Bale was different to Ronaldo because he was always pushed onto his left foot, but the paradox is that he scored with his right foot,” Sagna said. “He was very powerful and fast, which is a defender’s worst nightmare.”
While Bale operated primarily on the opposite flank — matched up against Gaël Clichy — Sagna noted the intensity of that individual battle, and Bale was interchangeable on both flanks, meaning he did come up against Sagna on occasion.
“Bale played on the left side in that game, so he was up against Gael Clichy but it looked like a real battle between them.”
Reflecting on a lesser-known moment from the semi-final, Sagna recalled a confusing incident during the first leg at the Etihad Stadium.
“I tackled Lucas Vazquez, got the ball and then I heard a whistle,” he said. “I didn’t think it was a foul, so I picked up the ball with my hands.”
The whistle, however, had not come from the referee.
“The referee looked confused, then he blew the whistle and gave a foul to Real Madrid,” Sagna said. “It turns out the first whistle was from a fan in the stands.”
The resulting free-kick was taken from a dangerous position, though Madrid ultimately failed to capitalize.
“It could have been a costly mistake, but thankfully I didn’t get a yellow card and Madrid didn’t score.”
