There are certain things in life that should never be taken for granted.
A good beer. A takeout order that is actually filled correctly. A nice hot cup of coffee on a cold winter day.
And, apparently, getting to watch Harry Kane and Michael Olise play football for Bayern Munich on a regular basis. Because there is a very real danger that Bayern Munich fans are becoming spoiled.
Kane scores another ridiculous goal? Cool.
Olise casually dribbles past three defenders before putting the ball exactly where
he wants it? Nice.
Kane drops into midfield, sprays a 40-yard pass, and then somehow ends up in the box to finish the move? That’s what we refer to as “Just another Saturday” around here.
Olise produces another highlight-reel moment that would have been the best play of the year for most players? Everyone shrugs.
This is not normal — yet somehow it has become normal to us. Why? Because we are witnessing two of the best players in the world ply their trade on a daily basis.
As a group, Bayern Munich supporters have somehow reached the point where watching two extraordinarily talented players operate at an absurd level has become part of the weekly routine. There was a time when fans would have spent years dreaming about having a striker like Kane or a winger like Olise.
Now, Bayern Munich honks can just turn on the television…err, fire up the Fandango app (depending on the day, of course!).
Kane, of course, is already one of the greatest strikers of his generation and the remarkable thing about watching him at Bayern Munich is that the goals are almost becoming the least surprising part of the experience.
Of course he scored.
Of course he finished that chance.
Of course he somehow managed to turn a difficult opportunity into something that looked like a training-ground exercise.
And then there is Olise, who appears to have decided that football should be played at a slightly different speed than everyone else.
There is something wonderfully unfair about watching Olise receive the ball with a defender standing directly in front of him. You know what is coming. The defender knows what is coming. The entire stadium knows what is coming.
And somehow, the defender still ends up chasing Olise. This is truly some Arjen Robben-esque (bleep).
The combination of Kane and Olise makes Bayern Munich particularly fun to watch. Kane brings the ruthless efficiency of an elite No. 9, while Olise provides the chaos, creativity, and occasional act of footballing vandalism required to make defenders question their career choices.
Luckily, Bayern Munich fans get to watch it happen over and over again and that is the part worth appreciating.
Football supporters are conditioned to constantly look ahead. Who is the next signing? Who needs to leave? Which youngster should play more? What position needs to be upgraded? What happens next summer?
Those questions are inevitable, but sometimes the answer should simply be: Stop. Watch the game. Soak it in. Savor it. Watch Kane. Watch Olise.
Enjoy this, because there is no guarantee that Bayern will always have players of this caliber walking onto the pitch every week. Careers end, transfers happen, injuries occur, and eventually even the most ridiculous talents move on.
For now, though, Bayern Munich fans have a front-row seat to two players who can make extraordinary football look routine.
And perhaps the greatest compliment that can be paid to Kane and Olise is that Bayern Munich supporters have become so accustomed to their brilliance that something genuinely spectacular can happen, and the immediate reaction is basically: “Yeah, that tracks.”
Enjoy it, Bayern Munich fans, this is the good stuff.
Song of the Week: “Bricks or Coconuts” by Jacuzzi Boys
It was time for a deep cut, so why not delve back into the garage rock phenomenon?
Released in 2010, “Bricks or Coconuts” did not achieve major airplay in most markets, so you really had to go find it. Luckily, there are still stations that don’t just rip off the mainstream hits. The song has actually gotten a little bit of a revival (more on that further down in this column) through its use in other mediums.
Enjoy (and let me know if you’ve heard this one before):
Entertainment Rundown
Tires
I unexpectedly started watching Tires, a Netflix comedy series, before I jumped into what is next on my list. This is filmed locally to me and my friends have been imploring me to watch it for a couple of years — and I am enjoying it. While the humor is not for everyone (admittedly, I like some immature humor), it does make me laugh consistently.
I’ll have a full review of the first 3 seasons (it’s a very quick watch with short episodes) in an upcoming Weekend Warm-up.
The show also used “Bricks or Coconuts” in a closing credit, which sparked my memory of the tune.
Crystal Lake
If you are interested in the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake here is the first snippet released:
Daredevil: Born Again
Well, Daredevil: Born Again will end after three seasons. While it did not recapture the magic of its grittier Netflix predecessor, it was still a good watch. At least we will get one last ride (unless it gets revived…again):
Predictions
FC Augsburg is not a pushover — far from it. However, Die Fuggerstädter are a little banged up and not operating at full strength. For a good team that is not super-deep, that is a problem, especially when facing Bayern Munich.
FC Bayern is coming in extremely healthy, with the exception of Jamal Musiala, who is working through the injury he sustained during the international break. On paper, Bayern Munich should be a convincing winner. However, there is a lot of variability with how FC Bayern will approach the game.
Some of Bayern Munich’s best players have racked up a lot of mileage during their respective time with their international teams. Harry Kane and Michael Olise, in particular, played big minutes. Will head coach Vincent Kompany rest them? Will there be a heavy rotation? It seems unlikely that would happen, but Bayern Munich also plays a Champions League game vs. Viking on Tuesday.
All that said, it just feels like Bayern Munich will have the edge in this game, despite FC Augsburg being a good team. It will be a tough game, but not necessarily a close one.
Prediction: FC Augsburg 0-3 Bayern Munich
