The Pittsburgh Steelers were very active in the trade market last offseason. They traded for wide receiver DK Metcalf in March before trading away George Pickens in May. And just when it appeared they could be done making moves, they shipped away All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith.
Ramsey was named a Pro Bowler after a strong first season in Pittsburgh, and Fitzpatrick was the leader on a young Dolphins defense
that made a run in the final month of the season towards a playoff spot after starting 1-6. Miami ultimately fell short of the postseason and has undergone several changes in the weeks since.
The Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel, hiring Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley to replace him. Additionally, Miami has released guard James Daniels, Pro Bowl pass rusher Bradley Chubb, and All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill, all while looking for a way to get rid of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Now, they are reportedly in trade talks with teams about Fitzpatrick.
“The Dolphins have had trade talks with teams regarding 5x Pro Bowl S Minkah Fitzpatrick,” Jordan Schultz reports. “Miami released four players earlier this week, including Tyreek Hill, and are in the early stages of resetting the roster under a new regime.”
It’s important to note that the Steelers cannot trade for their former safety, as NFL rules don’t allow a team to trade for a player it traded away within two years. He was a five-time Pro Bowler during his time in Pittsburgh.
