Milwaukee Bucks guard Gary Trent Jr. is still trying to figure out his future after two seasons with the team.
Trent Jr., 27, is a free agent still looking for a home for the upcoming season. Bleacher Report writer Dan Favale listed him as one of the top free agents still available.
“Pure shooting guards don’t hold as much appeal these days. Gary Trent Jr.’s value is also severely complicated by a down-bad 2025-26 campaign. At the same time, the degree to which he’s a one-position player gets overstated.
He can—and is—deployed as a wing more often than players like Anfernee Simons or even Bennedict Mathurin,” Favale wrote.
“Granted, most of Trent’s defensive value is rooted in creating chaos away from the ball. He didn’t do that nearly as well last year, and his approach is high-risk, high-reward even when it’s working. It still makes sense to bet on a 27-year-old’s longer-standing track record. Before last season, the best version of Trent saw him down a ton of threes and break up possessions at the less glamorous end.”
As of now, the Bucks don’t have space on the roster to sign Trent. There are 15 roster spots already filled, but that doesn’t mean Milwaukee can’t make a trade involving someone like Myles Turner or Caris LeVert. If the Bucks truly wanted GTJ back in the fold, they could make an adjustment or two in order to make it happen.
There is a chance Trent would prefer to play with a contending team on a one-year deal to prove himself so that he can gain more value for next offseason. There could also be value in joining a team like the Bucks that doesn’t have championship aspirations. That would give Trent a chance to earn more minutes, which could lead to a midseason trade.
If the Bucks signed him on a one-year deal and showcased him ahead of the trade deadline, Milwaukee could earn some value from him down the line.
