49ers promote DL Clelin Ferrell to face Cardinals, waive QB Adrian Martinez “Ferrell has appeared in three games this season (two with the 49ers). The team is promoting Ferrell to the active roster, so he will
not return to the practice squad after this game. In his three games this season, Ferrell has one sack, five tackles, and one QB hit. The 49ers will need him to be part of the rotation on a thin defensive line, due to multiple injuries.” Brian Robinson Jr. thriving in new role as 49ers’ offense continues to take shape (paywall) “I mean, I knew that,” he said, smiling, “but it’s my first time playing a role similar to this in my NFL career. I just had to learn how to be a little bit more patient. Just trust the coaching and the higher-ups that they will make it right and do what’s best for us as a team.
“I can’t get caught up in it, what’s going on and how things are going to play out. I just got to prepare the same way I prepare always.”
And it took some time to get used to the system. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Robinson is not just running over defenders, but he’s running over them in the right lane at the right time.
“It’s going to take time for you to forget the old verbiage, learn new verbiages, and allow it to stick, retain information,” Robinson said. “So I don’t think it’s hard. I can earn a place on the offense. Obviously just take me a little bit more time to get as comfortable as other guys who’ve been comfortable in this offense for years.”
In his return, 49ers’ Brock Purdy not fretting about on-fire backup Mac Jones (paywall)
“During his weekly media meeting at his locker, the All-Pro running back was largely expansive with one exception: Why are the 49ers the NFL’s only team without a run of 20-plus yards this season considering they have McCaffrey and Shanahan’s celebrated scheme?
“We haven’t gotten to 20,” McCaffrey said. “Hopefully, it’s this week.”
