Good morning, New York Giants fans! Here are the stories you need to know as the Giants get ready to scrimmage the Miami Dolphins this week.
Reasons for optimism for all 32 NFL teams | PFF
New York Giants: The 2025 draft class. There was plenty to like about the Giants’ 2025 draft class, with several rookies making an immediate impact. Jaxson Dart earned a 68.1 PFF grade, the second-best mark among rookie quarterbacks, while his 5.2% big-time throw rate led all rookies with at least 100 dropbacks and ranked ninth among all quarterbacks.
Running
back Cam Skattebo also impressed. His 80.5 PFF grade led all rookie running backs, and he proved incredibly difficult to bring down, averaging 4.1 yards per carry with 3.04 of those yards coming after contact. On defense, edge defender Abdul Carter wasted no time making his presence felt. His 84.5 PFF pass-rush grade ranked 10th among all edge defenders, while his 66 pressures ranked 11th at the position during the regular season.

7. Brian Burns, New York Giants. In the midst of a miserable season for the Giants, the seven-year veteran re-established himself as a star with a career-high 16.5 sacks and a pass rush win-rate of 16% that ranked him just outside the top 10. Considering it was a down year for Burns’ defensive line mates — defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence had just a half sack and edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux played in only 10 games — his explosion was even more surprising.
This year, Burns might have to share the wealth, with Thibodeaux plus young stars Abdul Carter and Arvell Reese (whom the Giants took in the last two first rounds) all figuring to be a part of New York’s pass rush. But that’s the only thing standing in his way. He showed he’s still got the speed and explosiveness that made him so dangerous during his years in Carolina. He hasn’t slowed down at all at age 28 and should be a centerpiece of new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson’s scheme.

The referee at practice threw a flag on Colton Hood after he cut off wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in the end zone. The rookie cornerback didn’t like the call and made it known. Coach John Harbaugh saw it unfold. He didn’t agree with Hood’s assessment and sent him to the sideline. But not until they had a quick chat.
“I wasn’t angry. I just wanted to make the point that, you know, what are you arguing about?” Harbaugh said. “The ball was in the air and you pushed the receiver and redirected him. It was a restriction. That’s going to be pass interference. But he’s competitive. He’s competitive. He wants to win every snap. And I think [that’s] part of the journey for the young corners.”
Malik Nabers’ return to team reps provides hope for Giants offense| New York Daily News
Malik Nabers’ first day back in live team reps at Monday’s practice didn’t go perfectly.
He stumbled on his first release when planting on his surgically repaired right knee. He limped while running his first 11-on-11 route. He only ran about 10 total routes in the practice. And he showed some restless emotion after an awkward half-jump to make one of his three catches in 7-on-7.

Giants: Kayvon Thibodeaux has seen the Giants both draft (Edge Abdul Carter) and trade (Edge Brian Burns) over him, and both players have been more productive than he has. The 2022 No. 5 overall pick registered just 2.5 sacks in 10 games (shoulder), a far cry from his 11.5-sack 2023 season that seemed to hold so much promise. Thibodeaux is heading into the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, so it’s a big year for his wallet, too.

Trending after Preseason Week 1, with Giants rookies impressing | The Athletic
Giants rookies. First-round linebacker Arvell Reese looks like an instant star in New York. The Ohio State product was a standout in training camp, and while his debut wasn’t perfect, it had everything you want to see from a top-five pick.
Third-round receiver Malachi Fields is also among the Giants’ biggest risers after catching all three of his targets for 34 yards and this touchdown. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Fields offers a Tee Higgins-like threat opposite Malik Nabers, and he should be the Giants’ WR2 before long. Fantasy managers take note.
The Giants’ Jaxson Dart challenge goes way beyond sliding | New York Post
The lasting image of Saturday’s Giants game, even more than the 13-10 final score — because, of course, it’s the preseason — and more than the positional battles that will shape the final roster spots, unfolded on the final play of the first quarter.
There was Vikings safety Jay Ward, unblocked, closing in on Jaxson Dart.
NFL: Giants QB Jaxson Dart’s blue tent trip was ‘standard medical timeout’ | USAToday.com
The NFL has clarified that New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart’s evaluation in the blue medical tent during the team’s preseason opener was a “standard medical timeout.”
League protocol involves multiple independent neurologists and medical trainers reviewing replay for signs of impact or injury behavior that can trigger a check. Dart was forced into the tent late in the first quarter Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings after safety Jay Ward delivered a crushing hit to the torso.
