German national team boss Julian Nagelsmann dropped a bit of a shocker during his press conference after the squad selections were made for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America when he indicated that Club Brugge striker Nicolò Tresoldi almost made the squad.
“Nicolò Tresoldi was very, very close to making the squad. He’s not a classic target man, but he’s a classic striker. He was extremely close, but in the end he didn’t make the squad because in that case we had to leave someone else out. It’s
not easy,” said Nagelsmann (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Tresoldi has had a very good season for Club Brugge, as he has tallied 19 goals and seven assists in 56 games across all competitions. The 21-year-old is 6’1” (1.86m) and offers a different look at the striker position than the two frontrunners to start — Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Newcastle United’s Nick Woltemade.
Like Bayern Munich’s Tom Bischof and FC Köln’s Said El Mala, though, Tresoldi will have to wait for the EURO 2028 to — hopefully — experience his first big tournament with Germany.
