It’s felt like #TheRivalry has lost some luster over the past few seasons, aside from Rafael Devers tormenting the Yankees, as Boston has kinda scuttled around mediocrity. Now, Devers is on the West Coast, the Red Sox have a full complement of potential future Yankee Killers, and the Yankees themselves come into this big four-game set red hot.
New York has won seven of their last eight, coming off back to back sweeps of the Cardinals and Rays. They’ve got a tougher opponent tonight, sitting just a game
and a half clear of the Red Sox in the Wild Card chase. Luis Gil is tasked with starting the first of these four games, his fourth outing of the year and while his return to the field against Miami was crummy, he’s been more than solid since.
Gil has thrown 10.2 innings, allowing three runs and an 11:4 K:BB ratio against the Astros and Cardinals. The walks will seemingly always be a challenge for the reigning Rookie of the Year, but high strikeout totals and control of medium contact make it hard to score those runners issued free passes. Gil has been stellar against the Red Sox in his career, with 16.1 innings thrown and two earned runs allowed in two previous starts.
Lucas Giolito is no stranger to Yankee fans, making his sixth start against them in what’s turning out to be a pretty solid Major League career. He has a 3.63 ERA in his first season in Boston, but his lowest strikeout rate since 2018 could indicate he’s more vulnerable than the topline stats may indicate.
Ben Rice is a starting bleepin’ catcher, getting the nod over Austin Wells tonight — although a good bit of that may be because the Yankees got into New York so late last night, per Michael Kay. He’ll hit fifth while Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Giancarlo Stanton go left to right in the outfield. As expected, Aaron Judge is your DH. Note that this is a national game, so tune in to FOX.
