Julian Alvarez has become Barcelona’s top target to replace Robert Lewandowski, according to the latest reports, and he’s been asked about the speculation after enjoying a great week.
The Argentina international
bagged a hat-trick against Rayo, a brace in the win over Real Madrid and followed that up with another goal and two assists against Eintracht Frankfurt.
He spoke to reporters after the match and, perhaps inevitably, was asked about the Barcelona rumors.
“Look, I’m very calm. We always talk, last year a lot of things were also said, but the truth is that this is just beginning, and my goal is to improve every day, to do better for the club, to win with my teammates, to win here. That’s the only thing on my mind. What is said on social networks is beyond me,” he told ESPN.
“Right now, the focus is on the season and also on the World Cup. Although there is still a long way to go until the World Cup, as a player, obviously, you can’t help but think about it, because it is the most important tournament. But, as I said, there’s still a lot of time and we have to take it game by game, step by step.”
Barcelona president Joan Laporta is reportedly determined to bring in Alvarez next summer. Yet it’s hard to see how a deal can be done as Atletico are expected to demand around €200m from any interested clubs.
