The #5 Syracuse men’s cross-country dominated the Northeast Regional on Friday to advance to the program’s 17th straight NCAA Championships. The Orange were led by Peter Walsdorf’s 2nd place finish and
then top-10 finishes from the other four scorers- Benne Anderson (6th), Matthew Neill (7th), Assaf Harrari (8th) and Sam Lawler (9th). Syracuse’s 32 points were the lowest winning total for the regional since the Orange scored 28 in 2017 and put them well ahead of Iona’s 95.
Syracuse will head to next Saturday’s Championship 10K at the University of Missouri with a chance at a podium finish (top four). Oklahoma State, Iowa State and New Mexico are the team favorites, leaving Virginia, Syracuse, Colorado, Oregon, Northern Arizona, BYU and Alabama all looking to secure a top-four spot. The Orange’s last top-five finish was a 3rd-place finish back in 2016. If Syracuse wants to grab a top team finish, they will need their five to run close together again in this one.
The men will be joined in Missouri by Selma Anderson, who finished 4th in the women’s Northeast Regional. Anderson earned one of the individual at-large spots as she continues an outstanding second season for the Orange. The Syracuse women were 4th as a team in the Northeast Regional, which was won by Boston College.
Saturday’s races will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The women’s 6k will start at 10:20 and the men’s 10k begins at 11:10. Live results will be available here.
