Newcastle United continues to prepare for the possible departure of captain Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal by identifying potential midfield replacements before the transfer window closes.
With Arsenal increasingly confident of completing a deal for the Brazil international, FC Porto’s Victor Froholdt has emerged as one of the leading midfielders under consideration.
OneFootball, citing Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, reported Newcastle is closely tracking the Porto star as it draws up contingency
plans.
“Victor Froholdt is one of the names being considered by Newcastle to strengthen midfield, should Bruno Guimarães leave the English club during this transfer window,” the report stated.
According to the report, no formal bid has been submitted, but Porto is prepared to demand close to Froholdt’s €85 million (£73 million) release clause.
“No formal offer has been made by Newcastle so far,” the report says. “The Premier League club is currently preparing several options for the squad in case Bruno Guimarães leaves.”
The 20-year-old Denmark international joined Porto from Copenhagen only last summer and quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers, earning 12 senior international caps in the process.
The Guardian also linked Froholdt with Newcastle as the club weighs its options amid the uncertainty surrounding Guimaraes.
“With the exit of Guimarães in mind, Newcastle have a close eye on FC Porto star Victor Froholdt. They reportedly watched the Danish midfielder several times last season and would expect to pay around £70m for the 20-year-old,” The Guardian reported.
The newspaper added that Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson and Botafogo midfielder Danilo, long linked with a move to St. James’ Park, remain in Newcastle’s shortlist and could still seal their transfers to Tyneside.
