Newcastle United’s ongoing struggles have inevitably increased attention on what the club might do to fix their issues come January, particularly after an extensive summer rebuild under Matthias Jaissle hasn’t quite excelled.
According to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle does have room to spend during the winter transfer window. That said, the Magpies hierarchy still believes the current squad was constructed to last the full season and might not make any panic acquisitions.
“There is definitely
headroom to spend in January, I’m told, but there is also a belief that the squad has been built for the entire season, not just half of it,” Hope reported.
A new striker does not currently appear to be a priority, with Newcastle already having Will Osula, Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Yoane Wissa as central attacking options in tow.
However, Hope identified one position that could become far more relevant if Newcastle’s struggles continue.
“I would not expect a striker to be sought, but a No. 10 feels like an obvious target,” he reported. “I know now of agents who are suggesting players in that position to the club.”
That indicates Newcastle is already getting calls from clubs with potentially available attacking-midfield options ahead of January, even if there is no suggestion negotiations have begun for a specific player.
Hope added that Newcastle remains satisfied with its summer business and that there is currently no sense of panic internally despite recent results.
“To answer the second question, Newcastle were very satisfied with their summer business come the end, and they remain pleased with how the window played out. They’ve stated that on the record,” Hope wrote. “As ever, though, results dictate how history judges any window, and right now both the manager and hierarchy are in need of an upturn. There is not a feeling of panic as yet, but ask me that question again as January approaches if improvement has not arrived.”
