Vincent Kompany has seen stable success come his way when he became coach of Bayern Munich, so far winning a handful of trophies while his side continues to hunt down more this season. None of his Bayern accolades come close to what he considered the ultimate achievement of his career, both as a player and as a manager.
“The first title we won with Manchester City. We won it at the very last second,” Kompany recounted (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “We had actually lost it in the final matchday
and then (Sergio) Kun Agüero scored at the last second and we won the title. I’d say that was my favorite.”
Most fans will know this moment. It’s the last day of the 2011/12 Premier League season and Manchester City and Manchester United both kickoff on the last day, with Man United leading by three points but with an inferior goal difference. City then found themselves 2-1 down to Queen’s Park Rangers while United held on for the win against Sunderland thanks to Wayne Rooney’s goal.
Then, Edin Dzeko pulled one back in stoppage time before Sergio Aguero picked up Mario Balotelli’s pass inside the box to slam the ball home. It was City’s first league title since 1968 at that point. The rest is history.
