Bayern Munich are looking to buy out a new stadium in Munich, according to recent reports.
While the Allianz Arena is one of the most modern and iconic stadiums in the world, it is a venue that is mostly reserved for Bayern’s senior men’s team. The other teams (women, youth) normally play at the FC Bayern Campus nearby, which only seats a measly 2500 spectators.
However, the Campus is increasingly unable to fit the growing demands of the games played there. The Frauen in particular have been exponentially
growing in popularity, with their last game at the Allianz Arena selling over 50,000 tickets. What’s more, the campus is not exactly fan friendly when it comes to public transport, with only bus service to and fro.
To solve these issues, Bayern are apparently looking into buying out SpVgg Unterhaching’s home ground Sportpark Unterhaching, which can seat up to 15,000 people. According to initial reports by Bild and further coverage from Sky Sports, as captured by @iMiaSanMia_GER, Bayern are negotiating a fee around 7.5 million euros for the stadium.
But Maverick you urban undertaker of Unterhaching, I hear you say, what would happen to the original tenants, then? Well, SpVgg Unterhaching are not the owners of the stadium anyway. Bayern would have to negotiate with the town of Unterhaching itself to purchase the stadium. The match schedule, meanwhile, would have to be negotiated with the club, but considering many teams around the world share stadiums, this can be solved as well. According to Bild, Bayern and Unterhaching have been in close cooperation in the youth sector in the past year.
The stadium is obviously located in the town of Unterhaching, a municipality of the Munich district. The town is only about 20 minutes from Marienplatz by S-Bahn. The stadium, meanwhile, is about a 15 minute walk from its nearest S-Bahn station, and gets bus service as well, making it quite accessible for fans.
However, if the latest reports from Sky are to be trusted, Bayern are not close to an agreement yet. Negotiations are still ongoing.
