It’s an NFC match-up tonight, so I guess mathemetically you’d want the Packers to lose so they don’t gain any ground on the 49ers. The Panthers would improve to 4-3 and lead their division, while the Packers are last in the NFC North. I’m not looking forward to technically having to root for Dallas, but at least I get to root for Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers and the Chicago Bears.
After bringing back DeForest Buckner, will the 49ers make more trades? “An addition such as Mack — or other potentially available
edge rushers like the Jets’ Will McDonald IV, Cardinals’ Josh Sweat or Bucs’ Yaya Diaby — would make sense to round out San Francisco’s rotation for a reasonable cost in terms of what they need to give up.
As with Bosa, the team has to be cautious with Evans to ensure he’s ready for the playoff push. Jacksonville’s Brian Thomas Jr., Cleveland’s Jerry Jeudy and the Colts’ Josh Downs (who requested a trade Wednesday) are among the wideouts who could be available for something less than a premium draft pick.
If the Niners truly want to swing for the fences, they could try to pry loose a superstar. Raiders end Maxx Crosby and Jets wideout Garrett Wilson are names that move the needle, but they’re unlikely trade candidates barring a significant offer — one with multiple top picks, probably including multiple first-rounders.”
49ers release struggling cornerback
“Atlanta picked on Jones in coverage. He allowed four of his five targets to be completed for 49 yards, allowing a passer rating of 107.5. In five games this season, Jones was targeted over 30% of the time when he was on the field. Teams were not scared of him.
Against Atlanta, Jones allowed 5.8 yards of separation on five targets. Add in the penalties, and he became unplayable, since the run defense and tackling were a struggle.
The 49ers will actually save money by releasing Jones, according to Over the Cap. He signed a one-year deal, and the contract has no guaranteed money beyond what appears to be a $140,000 signing bonus.
Cornerback Nate Hobbs remains on the injured reserve. That’s a potential veteran replacement in the second half if the 49ers don’t address cornerback ahead of the trade deadline.”
Defensive lineman? Check. Next on the 49ers’ shopping list: wide receiver
“Thomas isn’t the only disappointing first-round pick who might be moved: The Chargers (0-6) could part with Quentin Johnston (6-2, 208), the 21st pick in 2023 who has eight catches in five games after he had a career-best 735 yards receiving last season.”
