Just a few weeks ago, rumors began to swirl that Bayern Munich was going to purchase Sportpark Unterhaching and now it appears that the move will go through per a report from BR24Sport journalist Karoline Kipper:
FC Bayern Munich is set to become the new owner of the Sportpark Unterhaching. This would provide the German record champions with a larger and more sustainable venue for their women’s team. President Manfred Schwabl explained the implications of the sale for the local SpVgg Unterhaching in an exclusive
interview with BR24Sport.
According to the report, the stadium was previously owned by the city of Unterhaching, but the municipality decided to sell the arena. Ultimately, SpVgg Unterhaching waived its right to purchase the stadium and Bayern Munich swooped in for the move.
Amazingly, Bayern Munich will only have to pay €7.5 million euros for the stadium. For context, former Bayern Munich star Leroy Sané paid $8 million (€6.9 million) for a house in Los Angeles, California back in 2022. The reason for the low price is because the stadium is a fixer-upper and needs some renovations (Author’s Note: Chip and Joanna Gaines should look at this project):
The necessary renovations, in particular, would have been financially overwhelming for the regional league team: “The floodlights, lux levels, policing issues, bringing the pitch heating up to standard, and so on. We said we didn’t know if we could manage it.” These costs will then be borne by the new owner.
The 15,000 seat stadium is expected to house the FC Bayern Frauen, who would move from their 2,500 seat abode located on Bayern Munich’s campus:
“I’m confident we can pull this off smoothly,” Schwabl explains. The goal is to play in a stadium “that’s also suitable for the third division or the Women’s Champions League; there aren’t that many stadiums in the European arena that meet the requirements.” Besides Bayern Munich Women and SpVgg Greuther Fürth, the Munich Ravens American football team is also expected to continue playing there. “Our primary concern is that we have a long-term home,” Schwabl emphasizes.
Not everyone is a fan of the move, though. SpVgg Greuther Fürth supporters have protested the move, but it is not anticipated that there will be any change to the plans at this point.
