In light of Francisco Alvarez landing on the Injured List, the Mets are recalling Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse. By default, this makes Luis Torrens the starting catching on the team in Alvarez’s absence.
This will mark Senger’s third stint on the big league club this season, starting the year with the club for the first 25 games and then returning in late June for a two-week spell. In 21 games thus far this season, Senger is hitting .174/.208/.196 at the big league level. In the minors, Senger is hitting marginally
better, putting up a .221/.274/.344 slash line.
Alvarez is officially on the 10-Day IL, but the Mets said they were going to re-evaluate Alvarez’s thumb in ten to fourteen days. However, in a now-deleted tweet, SNY’s Andy Martino suggested that the Mets are concerned that Alvarez may not return to the team this season.
In 225 plate appearances, Torrens is hitting .214/.280/.301 with two home runs.
