The Tennessee Titans are preparing for Sunday’s Week 1 matchup with the Denver Broncos. Head coach Brian Callahan met with the local media on Monday to discuss preparations. If general manager Mike Borgonzi is going to make any last-minute roster additions, now’s the time.
The Titans can certainly use another EDGE, but Borgonzi seems satisfied with the current group. Another potential opportunity arose when the New England Patriots released veteran safety Jabrill Peppers last week. The question was
posed to me via social media, if the Titans should consider signing Peppers.
Dennard Wilson’s defense appears deep at safety. That unit should start out with Amani Hooker and Xavier Woods as the starters. Rookie Kevin Winston Jr. missed a large portion of training camp, but could ramp-up his practice participation this week. Quandre Diggs is also an unknown commodity after re-signing with the team a few weeks ago. Diggs suffered a season-ending foot injury last year.
Mike Brown is currently the fifth safety on the roster. If Winston Jr. and Diggs are healthy and productive, the Titans should be productive at safety. If those two struggle with availability or form, the Titans could be lighter at safety than we realize.
Peppers started 26 of his 38 games across three seasons as a versatile defensive back in the Patriots defense. He registered 178 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and recoveries each, and one sack. Ironically enough, it’s former Titans head coach and current Patriots leader Mike Vrabel who made the stunning decision to release one of his captains and alleged starters.
The Titans should be deep enough at safety to pass on an opportunity to sign Peppers. They’ve been intentional with Winston Jr.’s recovery from a partially torn ACL, and the defensive coaching staff believes in Diggs’ continued production. The Titans don’t need Peppers.
