Front offices in professional sports will often be asked hard questions and, oftentimes, the front office will dodge those questions and give a response that is deemed “professional.” We’ve all heard the “coach speak.” Sports fans will ask for honesty and transparency from their favorite team, but nine times out of ten, it’s unlikely that the fans will get that.
The Cleveland Browns are entering Year 2 of a rebuild and, on paper, this team is nowhere near contention for a playoff spot. The looming
QB question continues to be a concern for many. Despite that, Browns owner Jimmy Haslem spoke to the media a few days ago and gave interesting comments surrounding the team this season.
As it stands, the Browns win total for the year is at 5.5 on multiple sports betting sites. Fans will likely roll their eyes at this statement, but Haslem seems to have some form of confidence that this Browns team will be better than last year.
Haslem also gave another comment surrounding this season:
Ownership has a clear vision for the upcoming season, but they also have a clear vision for what this team wants to be the following season. Likely, their expectations are:
- 2026: Year 2 of a rebuild: Competitive but not contending
- 2027: Year 3 of a rebuild: Competitive, contending team in the AFC
Ownership is not alone in having some confidence in taking the over on Cleveland’s win total:
It’s clear that the ownership wants to see noticeable progress for the team, but they also know that this team isn’t going to be in the playoff conversation this season. Trading star defensive end Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams might have sped up the team to potentially “punt” the season, but instead of selling, the team chose to retain key players. Cornerback Denzel Ward received a new extension; the same can be said for safety Grant Delpit.
Considering that the Browns have an easier strength of schedule, the odds of the team winning more than 5.5 games are plausible; however, many things have to go their way for that to happen. Offensively, the unit has talent but major question marks; defensively, the unit lacks a true alpha, and head coach Todd Monken is entering his 1st year as a head coach.
Rebuilding teams can often be ahead of schedule, as we’ve seen before, but don’t expect Cleveland to be one of those teams. It’s possible that this team is a fringe playoff contender next season, but this season expect more of what happened last season, even if they add a win or two. The team will not be good enough to be in playoff contention but not bad enough to be a top 3 team picking in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Young, competitive, but just not good enough, just as Haslam seems to be alluding to.
