On Tuesday night, Bayern Munich dispatched Sporting CP in a 3-1 comeback victory in the Champions League. Serge Gnabry, Lennart Karl, and Jonathan Tah all scored in the second half to lift the home side and hand Sporting CP their first defeat in two months.
At the beginning of the second half, the Bayern ultras initiated a coordinated effort that set off flares and fireworks behind Manuel Neuer’s net. The resulting cloud of smoke enveloped the pitch for the next 10 minutes, including Joshua Kimmich’s
own goal.
According to a report from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern will face a stiff penalty for a repeat offense.
Bayern were sanctioned by UEFA in March after fans set off flares and other pyrotechnics during their Champions League round of 16 match against Bayer Leverkusen. The club received a fine of €500,000 and a suspended sentence with the threat of a fan ban. Now the second violation means a fan ban. Blocks 114 to 115 will remain closed for the next home game against Union Saint-Gilloise. That includes the blocks in the lower tier directly behind the goal (the main section of the Südkurve).
USG is in first place of the Belgian Pro League but hardly poses a threat to Bayern. Bayern will be forced to win without the support of the home fans. Konrad Laimer will also be forced to sit out the upcoming match due to yellow card accumulation.
