Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has emerged as a doubt for Uruguay’s next two games at World Cup 2026 due to the injury he sustained before the start of the tournament
.Araujo was forced to sit out Uruguay’s opener against Saudi Arabia and is not expected to return in time for their games against Cape Verde or Spain, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The center-back has suffered a minor calf tear and although his recovery is progressing well he still needs time until he’s ready to return.
Manager Marcelo
Bielsa has accepted responsibility for Araujo’s injury after revealing he arrived for international duty with a “muscle problem which wasn’t serious” but then became worse during training.
Group H is intriguingly poised with all to play for after the first round of matches which saw Spain held by Cape Verde and Uruguay draw with Saudi Arabia.
Uruguay will be hoping they can progress to the knockout stage, with Araujo expected to be fit in time for the Round of 32 if Marcelo Bielsa’s side make it through.
