The Detroit Lions may not have had a bunch of blockbuster moves this offseason, but they also weren’t very complacent, either. They signed 15 external free agents this offseason—well above their average under general manager Brad Holmes—in addition to adding seven draft picks and nine undrafted free agents.
Their scope was wide in improving upon their 2025 roster. There was a clear focus on improving the offensive line with the signing of Cade Mays and drafting of Blake Miller. They also attacked
the defensive end room with the additions of DJ Wonnum, Payton Turner, and Derrick Moore. And they fortified the depth in the secondary with the signings of Roger McCreary, Christian Izien, and Chuck Clark, in addition to the drafting of Keith Abney.
I could continue to go on, but let’s get to today’s Question of the Day:
Which Lions player benefited most from the Lions’ offseason?
My answer: The first name that comes to mind is Jared Goff. After suffering a career-high 38 sacks last season, the Lions’ investment in the offensive line should help turn that around… eventually. There are likely to be some early bumps in the road as the offensive line adjusts to three new players in new positions (Penei Sewell on the left plus Mays and Miller). But when things start clicking, Goff should have a more consistent pocket to manage in, and that is when Goff is his most lethal.
But don’t forget how much an improved offensive line will benefit Jahmyr Gibbs, as well. The Pro Bowl running back saw his efficiency crash hard at the end of last season as the offensive line struggled against good defensive fronts. If these shakeups on the offensive line can create more and bigger creases for Gibbs, he could take a massive jump.
Additionally, the signing of Isiah Pacheco should allow Gibbs to continue to take breathers, but not in a way that should significantly cut into his opportunities. With few skill player additions, Gibbs is going to continue to have a vast role in both the rushing and receiving game, and that could mean he’s in for a huge 2026 season.
