Eddie Howe has made clear that Newcastle United will not be left without a recognised striker, even if Alexander Isak leaves before the transfer window closes.
Isak, 25, remains determined to secure a move to Liverpool, and with Callum Wilson already departed, Howe’s side are without a proven senior forward. Newcastle’s pursuit of Brentford’s Yoane Wissa has so far been unsuccessful, while João Pedro, Hugo Ekitiké and Benjamin Sesko have already joined rival clubs.
Asked about the risk of starting
the season without a striker, Howe offered a firm response. “I don’t think the club will allow that situation to happen,” Howe said. “We certainly can’t go through the season with no recognised striker at the football club — and that’s no disrespect to Will Osula. I think he’s doing really well and progressing really well, but he’s got limited experience in the Premier League.”
Osula, 22, has yet to start a Premier League match since arriving from Sheffield United last year, leaving Anthony Gordon to play as a makeshift No 9 in the goalless draw at Aston Villa. Howe praised Gordon’s performance but admitted the team lacked Isak’s finishing touch.
“He’s an attacker and a very good attacker,” Howe said. “Anthony can play right, left and potentially down the middle, something he has done before. I don’t think anyone can fill Alex’s boots, and Anthony knows that himself. But I thought he looked a real threat.”
With Newcastle facing Liverpool next, Howe’s guarantee suggests the club’s hierarchy, led by PIF, will ensure reinforcements arrive before the deadline.
