What is the story about?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received potentially devastating news following Sunday’s 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb on his throwing hand late in the fourth quarter, head coach Todd Bowles confirmed following the game. Mayfield is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the full extent of the injury.

And the early outlook isn’t encouraging.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mayfield is likely to miss time because of the

injury, though exactly how long he could be sidelined won’t be known until additional testing is completed.

Mayfield was injured late in the loss after taking a hit while attempting a pass on fourth down. He immediately grabbed at his throwing hand following the play.

The injury is a massive blow for a Buccaneers team that has now fallen to 0-3 to begin the season.

Tampa Bay returns home next week to face the Green Bay Packers, and Mayfield’s availability now becomes the biggest storyline surrounding the team heading into Week 4.
