As we’ve seen in the last few years, Duke coach Jon Scheyer tends to use the portal strategically. He gets the occasional critical piece, like John Blackwell or (almost) Cedric Coward, but he also looks for the right guys to finish things up.
He gets guys who are willing to be practice players, who won’t play very much, but who will absolutely help the team. Think Jack Scott from this past season, or Cameron Sheffield.
The latest guy in that mold is Jacob Theodosiu, a 6-4 guard from Loyola Maryland.
He had a solid season for the Greyhounds, averaging 13.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.
Scheyer’s approach to the portal works because he gets really good talent every year and uses the portal to fill in gaps. Obviously, it’s a luxury that not everyone can have, but he’s making it work in a really interesting way.
Theodosiu will be the second Canadian on next year’s team, along with Maxime Meyer, and of course on the women’s side, Toby Fournier is also from up north.
