Oregon women’s basketball finished their non-conference slate with a game at the Chase Center in San Francisco to face an old Pac-12 rival, the Stanford Cardinal.
The Ducks played well in the middle quarters, but Stanford took over in the fourth to win the game, 64-53.
The Cardinal jumped on Oregon early, and a 9-0 run put the Ducks behind 15-4. Oregon chipped away at the lead and briefly held the lead in the third quarter before Stanford took over late in the game.
The Ducks did not finish the game well, only hitting two of their last 11 field goals, while the Cardinal nailed went 5-5 to send Oregon home with the loss.
“I thought it was a game we could have won,” said Oregon head coach Kelly Graves. “We haven’t had a lot of close games, we’ve only been in two and we played like it, unfortunately, late.”
“We left a lot of points out on the court,” Graves added. “Missed layups, some free throws late. That’s what happens when you get tested in a tight game.”
Be that as it may, Stanford is considerably taller than Oregon and dominated inside, scoring 40 points in the paint to 24 for the Ducks.
The teams were relatively even on all statistics save shooting. The Cardinal shot a little over 40% from the field, including 33% from distance. The Ducks only shot 32% and were a horrific 2-14 from beyond the arc.
Katie Fiso and Ehis Etute both finished with 14 points, while Mia Jacobs notched a double-double for the third straight game with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Oregon goes into conference play with a 12-2 (0-1, Big-10) record. They come back to Eugene to square off against Michigan next Monday evening and host Northwestern on January 1st.
