Welcome to The Daily Merengue — a place where you can feel free to discuss all things football. Do not be alarmed by the overt RMCF bias. It’s in the name!

Writer’s Prelude. This DT was written prior to the official start of the 2026 World Cup so it won’t feature any cohesive breakdown of the Mexico v. South Africa match. Instead it will loosely talk about some recent Real Madrid
events.
A Few RM Tidbits
Mourinho. This legitimately just popped up while writing so I want to first start by saying fuck you to the Real Madrid comms department for finally announcing Mourinho on a day where I have zero time to actually do my Jose Juninho thread. DISGUSTING BEHAVIOR. I’m actually writing this portion after I finished the below lmao. Anyway welcome to the Jose Juninho Era. It may not be successful, but it’ll be a rollercoaster ride with entertainment all along the way.
Bernardo Silva. At the point of writing, the Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid news has reached a crescendo with the 31-year old midfielder advanced to join the club. This news has been building for a bit of time and was further indicated around 1-2 weeks ago when Silva’s advanced discussions with our La Liga rivals (Atletico & Barca) suddenly stopped. You may wonder why?! The Jorge Mendes effect. Now that Real Madrid no longer has a ban regarding the Gestifute agency expect to see us linked to a larger list of his clients.
Jose Juninho’s Quick Thoughts. Although a bit on the older side than our more recent transfer policy, I actually welcome the signing of Bernardo Silva. Assuming Jose Mourinho employs a 4-2-3-1 formation, Bernardo fits about 3 of our roles (i.e., 10, RM who drifts centrally, and as a DLP. Bernardo is a technical and experienced player who is more than equipped to dictate Real Madrid’s play going forward. He is also heavily committed to his defensive duty often pressing for Pep’s City. At Real Madrid, especially a Madrid with no Rodri, Bernardo could easily be paired with a more defensive pivot like Tchouameni and finally assist us in dictating play. No longer will we need Arda Guler or Jude Bellingham (or in some cases Kylian Mbappe) to drop deeper receive the ball at their feet. Silva is more than capable of facilitating that role to a high degree.
Now, I do have some concerns regarding his age and whether he’ll have the legs to perform at a high-level all season. In many ways, my concerns around Bernardo are similar to my prior concerns around Luka Modric. Extremely experienced playmaker that fits our needs BUT may just not have the legs to always get around. The pros on this is well-Bernardo is vastly younger than Luka last year (31 vs 39) so there’s some hope. Also Silva performed at a relatively high level throughout his last campaign for City. Anyway, I wish him the best and this seems to be another (not flashy) but smart signing during the Mourinho era.
Nico Paz. And as Real Madrid gives, Real Madrid takes. It looks again like Nico Paz will remain at Como in Italy for another season. I’m not going to dive too much into this news because it isn’t officially confirmed and to be honest it makes sense. The Real Madrid midfield right now is cluttered and requires players to leave before Nico can properly make a splash at a potential 10 role. By 2027, we will likely have a better view of Bellingham and Arda’s future which both expire in June 2029. The Jude Bellingham contract renewal process will likely be explosive so get ready MM lol. I personally rate Nico pretty highly so I hope he does find his way back to the Bernabeu but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up the Argentine-Odegaard or KDB.
