Earlier this week, we asked fans how many teams they feel should be in the College Football Playoff. And now, the results are in.
- 43% of fans voted for a 16-team playoff
- 39% voted for a 12-team playoff
- Just 18% of fans voted for a 24-team playoff
The current playoff format consists of 12 teams, but expansion is on the horizon and could come as soon as 2027. The Big Ten is pushing for a 24-team playoff and getting rid of conference championships, while the SEC prefers 16 teams. The Big Ten and the SEC appear to be at odds over expansion moving to 16 or 24. Some Maize n Brew readers expressed their dismay over a 24-team field,
viewing it as a cash grab that benefits their television broadcast partners.
I would have preferred an 8-team field, but it went from four teams all the way to 12. While I’ll always prefer more football over less, the thought of the James Madisons of the world getting blown out doesn’t sound that appetizing. With 24 teams, the lopsided matchups would become even worse. If there’s to be expansion, 16 seems reasonable while 24 seems reckless and irresponsible. It’ll be interesting to see if the Big Ten or the SEC get their way on this matter.
