The Seattle Seahawks will have some reinforcements coming on special teams starting with this Thursday’s critical road game at the Denver Broncos.
On Tuesday, the team announced that wide receiver Irv Charles has been activated onto the 53-man roster. Charles was placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the regular season as he continued to recover from an ACL tear suffered at the end of the 2024 season. Charles may be listed as a wide receiver but he’s never been targeted since entering the NFL
in 2022, instead making a name for himself as a special teams gunner during his time with the New York Jets.
Seattle’s special teams unit has been a mixed bag, with Jason Myers performing strongly throughout the regular season afer a sub-par preseason. The punt coverage unit has recovered two fumbles and otherwise hasn’t given up a punt return yard yet, but they have been one of the league’s worst units at defending kick returns. Charles figures to be a help on that front in addition to gunner duties. Seattle traded for Charles in May, giving up a conditional 2028 draft pick.
Seattle released running back Velus Jones Jr in a corresponding move. As a vested veteran, Jones doesn’t have to clear waivers and can immediately revert to the practice squad if so desired.
