It’s a big one this weekend, as the Michigan Wolverines head to Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners in a Top-25 matchup. Bryce Underwood will make his first career start on the road, with this one being in front of a raucous SEC crowd at night.
On the other side is transfer quarterback John Mateer. A redshirt junior, Mateer followed his offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma from Washington State. Last season, the tandem led the Cougars to an 8-5 record and an impressive win over rival Washington.
Now, they hope to bring that magic with them to Norman, where the two want to revolutionize the Sooner offense. Week 1 was a heck of a start, as Mateer threw for almost 400 yards and scored three touchdowns against Illinois State.
Here’s where you can watch the game of the week on Saturday.
No. 14 Michigan Wolverines vs No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners
- Day: Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025
- TV: ABC
- Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
- Location: Norman, OK
- Weather: 69 degrees, partly cloudy
- Odds: Oklahoma -4.5, O/U: 46.5
Before the season, Oklahoma was only a 2.5-point favorite. But as the line was set after each team’s Week 1 performance, the Sooners are now favored by 4.5. That was a bit of a surprise to me after both teams played well against two non-competitive opponents.
Analysts want to point to Underwood making his first road start, which is absolutely fair. But let’s not pretend that this isn’t the biggest game of Mateer’s life, either. He’s started just one game against a Top-25 opponent in his career, and it was Boise State last season. If you average out the scoring defense for all 11 of the FBS opponents Matter faced last season, that defense ranked 88th in the country. Four of those 11 starts came against scoring defenses that ranked outside the Top-100. Mateer has never seen a defense, nor the talent of a defense like the one Wink Martindale and the Wolverines will bring into this game.
Credit where it is due — Mateer has performed at a high level against bad defenses. In his last 13 games, he has 3,531 passing yards, 826 rushing yards and 48 total touchdowns while completing about 65 percent of his passes. The question that remains is whether he can keep that consistency playing against the nation’s top defenses instead of the worst ones.
Defensively, the Sooners made noticeable improvements last season, and that’s because they continue to retain talent. Of the 22 players on their defensive two-deep, only three are transfers. Plus, they boast an impressive duo of edge rushers in R Mason Thomas and Marvin Jones Jr.
For Michigan to win, the offensive line not only needs to keep Underwood upright, but they also must create lanes for Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall. After an encouraging Week 1 performance from the group, there’s hope they can keep the ball rolling into Norman.
With two offenses that have a lot to prove and defenses that are seemingly leading the way, I’m going to be taking the under in this game as it may take some time for both sides to get things going.
