The opening weekend of college football offered results that were sure to shake up the rankings in part because so many ranked teams played each other. But the second week arguably created more fireworks with massive upsets and blowouts.
The biggest matchup of the week — the Michigan Wolverines against the Oklahoma Sooners — ended in Michigan’s first defeat. As a result, Oklahoma saw the biggest boost of any team in the rankings, jumping up to No. 13. The Wolverines barely stayed inside the rankings, coming
in at No. 23, eight spots lower than last week.
Around the Big Ten, most of the programs handled business relatively easily. Ohio State and Penn State shut out their FCS opponents, Illinois had a late boost to defeat Duke in a tough road matchup, Indiana won easily against Kennesaw State, and Oregon had the biggest win of the week, blowing out Oklahoma State, 66-3. Three of the top four teams in the country, per the AP, are Big Ten Conference teams.
Outside the conference, the SEC canceled out its Oklahoma win with a massive Florida loss to South Florida, dropping the Gators out of the rankings and welcoming the Bulls in at No. 18. In addition, Clemson had a very close scare against Troy and dropped from No. 8 to No. 12. And most surprisingly, Arizona State fell out of the rankings after its very late loss to Mississippi State with less than a minute to go.
The AP voters were not messing around when they said that multiple factors would come into play with the rankings this season, and you can see for yourself that each week may bring about a brand new list. Below is the entire AP Top-25 after the second week of the 2025 season.
