Maryland football’s roster is one of the youngest in the nation this year, but that hasn’t stopped them from impressing on a national stage.
Three freshmen in particular — quarterback Malik Washington and defensive ends Sidney Stewart and Zahir Mathis — have shone for the Terps through six games. The trio can now add a spot on the On3’s Midseason True Freshman All-American Team to their rapidly growing lists of accomplishments.
Washington has averaged 251 yards per game while throwing for 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has already been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice.
Mathis and Stewart each have 4.5 sacks, which ranks top among FBS freshman and joint-23rd in the nation. Mathis adds 23 tackles, six TFL and two quarterback hits to that statline; Stewart has 17, seven and five, respectively.
Maryland will look to snap a two-game losing streak against UCLA on Oct. 18. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. EST at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
