Philipp Lahm’s retirement didn’t just leave a gaping hole in the hearts of Bayern Munich fans, it also left a void on the right-hand side of Die Rekordmeister’s defense. A void that has proved extremely
difficult to fill, swallowing every player presenting a potential fit for the Lahm-sized hole. While Kimmich was by all rights the perfect heir to Lahm’s throne, the current German national team captain followed exactly in his predecessors footsteps after being transitioned into the midfield. Since then, players like Noussair Mazraoui, Bouna Sarr, Benjamin Pavard, Josip Stanišić and Sacha Boey have all been unable to lock the position down. However, Konrad Laimer’s recent emergence as one of Europe’s best full-backs this season has provided Bayern with some relief and allowed the German giants to, once again, consider the long-term solution to the right-back position.
According to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern have set their eyes on Feyenoord’s 19-year-old right-back, Givairo Read, as a potential long-term solution for the position. However, Bayern will face stiff competition for the Dutchman’s signature, particularly from Premier League giants, Manchester City.
Both Bayern and Manchester City are interested in Givairo Read. It’s true that Bayern are following and scouting Read, who is an option for the right-back position. But City have also added the Dutchman to their shortlist as they look to sign a new right-back in January
If it’s a bidding war with City, Bayern will have to go right-back to the drawing board. Pun intended. An ever frugal Bayern will struggle to go toe to toe against ‘The Sky Blues’ infinitely deep pockets. ‘Die Rekordmeister’ will have to outfox City if they are to beat the Premier League outfit to Read’s signature which, given Bayern’s resurgence, may be possible. But it all depends on Read and what project the Dutchman finds more attractive.
Do you think Givairo Read would be a better signing for Bayern Munich or Manchester City?
