Newcastle United could receive an unexpected financial boost if former head coach Eddie Howe becomes Manchester United’s next manager.
The Guardian reported on Tuesday that Manchester United would have to pay Newcastle around £3 million in compensation if it appoints Howe, who left St James’ Park in July.
“Manchester United will have to pay Newcastle about £3m in compensation if they want to make Eddie Howe their next manager,” The Guardian reported.
The payment is linked to an unreported agreement
reached when Howe departed Newcastle. According to the report, “a deal was struck on the remaining terms of his contract which means the club would be due compensation.”
Manchester United would also reportedly owe Newcastle a smaller additional payment if Howe takes members of his former coaching staff with him, including assistant Jason Tindall.
Howe is described as the preferred candidate of Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox and is said to want the Old Trafford job. Current head coach Michael Carrick remains in place for now, with the club expected to remove him only once a successor has been secured. That said, his days on the bench seem to be numbered.
Manchester United has gone eight matches without a win following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, increasing the pressure surrounding Carrick’s position.
Would £3 million in compensation represent good business for Newcastle after Howe’s departure, or should the club have secured a bigger payment? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
