We now know Spain are already in the FIFA World Cup Final. There they await the victors of the classic World Cup rivalry for the ages when England take on defending champions Argentina.
England have been consistently pretty good throughout the tournament, misfiring against Ghana in a scoreless draw but have weathered some adversity too, holding on shorthanded for a win in Mexico and then coming from behind to beat a resilient Norway. Thomas Tuchel still has some starting lineup decisions to make at right
back and right wing, but the Three Lions will pose a threat.
Argentina have been doing what champions do, finding ways to win even without looking good in the process. They needed extra time to break down 10-man Switzerland in the last round, and before that came through in close games against Egypt and Cape Verde before that.
It’s going to be a close, and it’s going to be good. The rivalry between the two teams is one for the ages, and they haven’t met in any kind of game since 2005. 18-year-old Lionel Messi made his Argentina debut that year, but he was suspended for this friendly. For the record England are 4-3-1 against Argentina, with that sole defeat coming in that fateful ‘Hand of God’ game in the 1986 World Cup.
