Romeo Doubs’ Patriots debut did not start off on the right foot.
The veteran wide receiver is ready to move forward.
“I appreciate the question. What happened in the past must stay in the past,” Doubs said Thursday. “So, thank you.”
Doubs saw three targets in his debut, failing to corral any of them. That included a fourth-quarter drop, which he owned up to, that preceded an interception, along with another target in his direction that was picked off.
Even with the lack of results, head coach Mike Vrabel
is not worried about the receiver he signed to 4-year, $68 million contract in free agency.
“He dropped a pass. You know what I mean? Guys, everybody drops a pass. Everybody misses a tackle,” Vrabel said. “You talk to him the same way you always talk to him. Figure out a way to make a play to help us win, and he did a lot of great things during camp, just like everybody did. And so, I know he’s excited to get back out there, get to work and to find a way to help us win.”
Vrabel wasn’t lying.
“It’ll be exciting,” Doubs said when asked about Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Patriots will simply need a better version of the 26-year old moving forward as top wide receiver A.J. Brown is sidelined at least four weeks with a high-ankle sprain. That leaves Doubs atop the depth chart, followed by Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III.
Doubs, and his quarterback, have confidence in his ability to rebound.
“I have a ton of confidence in myself, but I look forward to keeping my humility sane and doing what I do,” he said.
“You guys saw it in camp, and his ability to make plays,” Drake Maye added. “He has had a great response [this week]. I am looking forward to seeing him on Sunday.”
