When reports that the Buffalo Bills signed linebacker Terrel Bernard to a four-year, $50 million extension in March 2025, the reaction from portions of Bills Mafia was mixed. As real contract numbers slowly surfaced, the deal was a four-year, $42 million contract with some escalators and “not like to be earned” bonuses. Fast forward to the end of the 2025 season, and any of the positivity derived had seemingly vanished altogether.
Some questioned whether general manager Brandon Beane had moved too
quickly. Bernard was coming off consecutive 100 tackle seasons and had established himself as the leader of Buffalo’s defense, but injuries limited his effectiveness in 2025.
Was paying him $10.5 million per season an overreaction?
On Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins agreed to a three-year, $51.3 million extension with Jordyn Brooks, including $35 million guaranteed . The contract keeps Brooks in Miami through the 2029 season and makes him one of the NFL’s highest-paid linebackers at $17.1 million per year.
The comparison between the two contracts is striking.
While Brooks received just $9.3 million more in total contract value, he’s earning $6.6 million more per season on average than Bernard. Had Bernard reached this offseason healthy and produced another 100-plus tackle campaign, it’s fair to wonder whether his asking price would have climbed much closer to Brooks’ range.
To be fair, Brooks has earned every bit of his new contract. The former first round pick is coming off a spectacular 2025 season in which he led the NFL with 183 tackles, had 3.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, forced a fumble, and earned First-Team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career.
Bernard’s résumé isn’t quite as decorated. Not even close. What he represents however, is something the Bills value philosophically; develop, lead, extend. That’s been their trademark in the Beane era.
Since taking over as Buffalo’s starting middle linebacker, Bernard has become the quarterback of the Bills defense. He’s been voted one of the team’s captains in each of the past two seasons alongside Josh Allen. He produced back-to-back 100 tackle seasons while healthy in 2023 and 2024. But injuries slowed him in 2025, dropping his production almost by half.
The Bills weren’t paying solely for statistics. They were investing in one of the leaders of their locker room, a player they believe is entering his prime, and one they wanted to keep in Buffalo before the market had another chance to reset.
It’s a strategy Beane has used repeatedly. Rather than waiting for players to reach free agency or produce career years, Buffalo has often signed foundational pieces early. Christian Benford, Khalil Shakir, Greg Rousseau, and Bernard all fit that philosophy. But, is it the right move? You never know until it plays out.
Looking at Brooks’ extension, it’s becoming easier to understand the timing. If Bernard returns to his 2023 and 2024 form this season, a $10.5 million annual salary could quickly look like one of the better values among starting linebackers. Had Buffalo waited until 2026, they might have been negotiating in a market where Brooks’ $17.1 million annual average had become an obvious benchmark.
If Bernard returns to being the every-down captain who routinely topped 100 tackles and anchored the defense, Beane’s decision to extend him early could prove to be outstanding value. If injuries continue to limit his availability or production, the questions surrounding the contract will only grow louder.
The truth is, we still don’t know whether Beane got a bargain or paid a premium for Bernard. That answer won’t come from comparing contracts just yet. It’ll come from Bernard’s performance over the next 17 games. For Bills fans, if he has a great season, contract numbers rarely matter.
For now, the Bills’ decision remains incomplete. The contract has been signed for a while now, but the final grade won’t be written until Bernard shows whether he can stay healthy and perform like one of the league’s top linebackers.
