Paul McNeil got himself in the record books tonight. His 11 made 3PT shots are the most in NC State history, breaking Rodney Monroe’s record of 9 and ties the ACC record, and those 47 points put
him in very good company in the Wolfpack record books as well.
- David Thompson – 57 pts (1975)
- Ronnie Shavlik – 55 pts (1955)
- Ronnie Shavlik – 49 pts (1955)
- Rodney Monroe – 48 pts (1991)
- Paul McNeil – 47 pts (2025)
Game Summary:
In the pregame radio broadcast, they announced Darrion Williams was going to sit this one out. Not an unexpected move, he has been struggling with a sore shoulder since Maui, and he is expected back for Sunday’s game against Ole Miss. After that one, Darrion will have another 10 days to rest it before the ACC season starts.
The starting lineup was a surprise, we knew Williams was out but Holloman didn’t start either. During the shootaround at halftime, he was working with a trainer on either his right hip or right knee but he did play 18 minutes. Alyn Breed took Holloman’s slot and Musa Sagnia stepped in for Darrion, along with the usual cast of characters, Lubin, Copeland and McNeil.
This one was over early. At the 16:49 mark Paul McNeil made his 3rd 3PT shot and the score was 14-2. By the half it was 51-28. In only 13 minutes, P2 had 26 points and 6 rebounds. 10 players played and 9 of them had at least 9 minutes.
The second half was just a matter of seeing if McNeil would break the record, whether Jordan Snell would get in and score, and if the fans would get free chicken. McNeil did his thing, Jordan missed his one shot, and Texas Southern did not miss their free throws.
Overall Takeaways:
- Defensive energy was high. TSU was held to 40% / 21% and turned the ball over 13 times.
- Rebounding was clearly a focus, 10 Wolfpack players grabbed at least 3 each
- 21 assists on 34 made baskets is solid
- Only 7 turnovers
- 24 fast break points
