In an exciting preseason friendly, Vincent Kompany had another great opportunity to tinker with his squad as well as give some game-time to players that might not usually hit the field. It was by no means a perfect match by Bayern, but with such heavy rotation, chemistry is near impossible to accomplish. However, it gave fans a good opportunity to look critically at some individual players.
Lennart Karl is a wonderkid
Lennart Karl scored another brilliant goal. It might be too early to tell, but Karl is looking like the real
deal. At the Club World Cup, the young German delivered pace, energy, and showed great signs of attacking positioning. Since then, Karl has proved quickly he has real scoring threat with an already solid catalogue of strikes for someone at his age.
Tom Bischof could become the club’s unsung hero
Tom Bischof could quietly become one of Bayern Munich’s best transfers of recent years. The potential is certainly there for him to become a top-end talent. Not as flashy as others, but the quality is absolutely there.
Kim Min-jae’s woes continue
The inexperienced defense showed its inexperience. Against a much less competitive squad, they didn’t look rock solid. What speaks even more volumes is the fact that blockbuster signing Kim Min-jae didn’t stand out amongst the backline. Perhaps, it is best to move on from the South Korean.
Veterans did not deliver
The longest tenured players from Bayern Munich disappointed the most in today’s match. Serge Gnabry, Raphaël Guerreiro, Kim Min-jae, and Sacha Boey were all outperformed by their squadmates. Perhaps the youth talent have more to prove in these friendlies, but these are first-team players that are being outperformed. No one necessarily played awful, but it is time for these guys to lead by example.
