With last minute injuries removing Aleksandar Pavlović and Felix Nmecha from Germany’s lineup against Switzerland, Julian Nagelsmann relied on veteran depth to fill the void. Unfortunately, Leon Goretzka and Angelo Stiller had forgettable performances. On the bright side, Florian Wirtz proved to be unstoppable on his path to two first half assists and a second half brace, including the game winner in the 85th minute.
In his postgame interview, Wirtz was asked to self-assess whether this was his best
game for Germany.
“Probably yes,” said Wirtz (via @iMiaSanMia). “With this many goal involvements, yes. In the first goal, I’d be lying if I said I meant it to go exactly there, but I’ll take it. In the second goal, you can see that’s exactly where I wanted the ball to go.”
Wirtz’s first goal was somewhere between a low cross and a looping shot. The effort ended up sailing to the upper 90 area of the back post, giving Germany a temporary lead.
Wirtz’s game winner was more precise from a much better angle.
