Newcastle United’s deadline-day business will not be limited to finalizing first-team transfers, with the club also facing important decisions over the immediate futures of several promising youngsters.
New manager Matthias Jaissle gave a significant number of academy players opportunities during his first preseason in charge, but Newcastle must now decide which prospects will benefit more from playing regular football elsewhere.
Chronicle Live’s Sean McCormick reported on Tuesday that another two
or three youngsters could follow Rory Finneran — who joined Notts County and made an impressive debut at the weekend — out on loan before the window closes.
Sean Neave appears to be among the leading candidates to follow him through the exit door.
“Sean Neave has plenty of interest and the teenage forward has outgrown under-21s football,” McCormick reported. “He is a prime candidate to move elsewhere today.”
Leo Shahar represents another interesting decision. The 19-year-old right-back has been included in all three of Jaissle’s competitive matchday squads this season given Tino Livramento’s absence, suggesting the head coach will need to make a tough call here on whether to keep him or loan him out.
“There is also sure to be interest in full-back Leo Shahar, who has been in all three of Jaissle’s matchday squads so far this season,” McCormick wrote.
Miodrag Pivas could also leave temporarily after featuring heavily throughout preseason. The 21-year-old defender has been another regular around Jaissle’s senior squad, although Newcastle’s defensive depth could influence whether the club ultimately sanctions his departure. Mason Miley, however, seems to be staying.
“(Pivas) could be another candidate for a loan move, but Mason Miley is expected to stay and continue his development with the under-21s,” McCormick added.
Trevan Sanusi is another player whose situation warrants attention. The winger, however, struggled for opportunities during his loan spell at Lorient last season, but McCormick envisions him jumping to senior football this season, which would likely have to happen out of Tyneside.
Jaissle has already demonstrated a willingness to trust young players, but keeping prospects around the first team without meaningful minutes could hinder their development. With Finneran already securing senior football, Newcastle must now determine whether Neave, Shahar, Pivas and Sanusi would benefit from following the same path.
