A place for many sports fans to go when the allure of looking forward in time overtakes the current happenings is to turn one’s focus to the upcoming stars. And with Liverpool’s season such as it is, well, I guess this is really one of the few things we’ve got. So, Liverpool’s U21s had a friendly and, well, that’s what I’m choosing to write about.
Now, I know enough not to lede with the biggest reason for writing a thing – but to drop a little hint to whet your appetite. In that vein, I will say that the reason I chose
to write up this story besides how dire Liverpool’s season is in its current state, has a little bit to do with my love of Disney.
Liverpool’s U21s took the the Kirkby pitch against another youth academy and put together a scoreline of 4-nil. Which is really great because the senior team has not had a scoreline this convincing in quite some time. It’s the kind of season where living vicariously through the youth is standard operating procedure.
Among the goalscorers was Keyrol Figueroa who is on the shortlist of players in the academy to watch, along with Josh Sonnie-Lamb. Figueroa also holds some interest being that he currently plays for the USMNT’s Academy.
Ultimately, it was a match that didn’t count in terms of points or table position, but it was another opportunity for the players to develop and implement the things they’d been working on in training. For those with razor-sharp eyes for pop culture references, though, it was a match that held some extra weight. Because Liverpool’s opponents for the day were i2i Academy. And, well, everyone knows that a bop from a feel-good 90’s film deserves remembering.
