According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Carolina Panthers are likely to be without their top receiver against the Detroit Lions on Sunday night. Schefter is reporting that wide receiver Jalen Coker is “unlikely to play” in Week 4 due to a quad injury that had him limited in practice this week. It’s worth noting that the Panthers also elevated receiver Ja’seem Reed from the practice squad—another sign Coker may not be ready to go this week.
Coker has been the Panthers’ most productive
receiver through three games, hauling in a team-leading 18 catches for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
The Panthers are in a bit of a tight spot when it comes to their receiving corps. Not only is Coker trending toward missing this game, but 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette was placed on injured reserve this week. That said, the Panthers still do have 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan (12 catches, 193 yards this year), John Metchie III (two catches, 19 yards, TD), and Brycen Tremayne (four catches, 83 yards).
Additionally, the Panthers sport an impressive trio of tight ends in Darren Waller, Tommy Tremble, and Mitchell Evans, who have combined for 22 catches, 240 yards, and two touchdowns this season. The Lions have notoriously struggled against tight ends through three weeks, allowing a league-high 351 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
Still, this is fortunate break for a Lions secondary that has struggled to defend the pass more than any other team thus far. Detroit ranks dead last in passing yards allowed per game (299.3) and are 27th in passer rating allowed (110.2). Meanwhile, the Panthers offense ranks first in passing offense (295.7 yards per game) and 16th in passer rating (95.6)
