Thanks to a big game from Giancarlo Stanton on Tuesday night, the Yankees took the second game of the series against the Nationals, setting up a chance for them to sweep cellar-dwelling Washington in a Wednesday afternoon matinee.
As the Yankees try to break out the brooms, they’ll send Max Fried to the mound. Last weekend against the Red Sox, Fried had his best start since his blister issues began to arise, as he threw six shutout innings versus Boston. Prior to that, he had an ERA over seven in his previous
six starts, so hopefully he’s over whatever happened there and is back to looking like the All-Star he was prior to that.
For the Nats, Cade Cavalli will get the ball. The former first-round pick originally debuted in 2022, but then went through a whole host of injury issues, including Tommy John surgery. He did not return to the big leagues until earlier this month, and has been pretty impressive since returning, with a 2.82 ERA and a 3.62 FIP. That includes a couple solid efforts from Cavalli against a good Phillies lineup in his last two starts, combining for 14 innings of three-run ball, striking out nine with one homer allowed to Bryson Stott.
Ben Rice is back in the starting lineup at first base after a day off, with Paul Goldschmidt heading to the bench due to the righty Cavalli on the bump for Washington. The Yankees also remain careful with their deployment of Giancarlo Stanton in the outfield, as he takes a seat after three games in right field in four days. Jasson Domínguez, who homered Monday against the Nats, will man left, with Cody Bellinger shifting to right.
