If you’ve been keeping up with our Marquette women’s basketball season preview package
, first of all: Thank you very much for your dedication to both Cara Consuegra’s Golden Eagles as well as this fine internet website.Careful consideration of what we’ve been talking about as the season has been inching closer tells you that it’s impossible to get a handle on what to expect from Marquette this season. They went through a tremendous amount of roster turnover from last season, although most of that is because
Consuegra brought in a bunch of juniors for her first season in charge. By default, there were going to be a lot of women leaving after two seasons. MU also has to deal with the transfer of leading scorer Skylar Forbes, who’s at West Virginia now.
That leaves us with only Halle Vice as a dependable returning face from last season, and the collection of newcomers that Consuegra has assembled isn’t causing anyone to jump out of their seats to say “oh, now there’s a game changer!” That’s fine, build how you see fit as the head coach. The fact of the matter is that Marquette got worse — for whatever reasons — from Consuegra’s first season to her second season even though she returned her entire roster. They were further away from the NCAA tournament in Year 2 than they were in Year 1, and now Consuegra is resetting things as the tourney expands to 76 teams.
It would be a very good time for Consuegra to have her best season as Marquette’s head coach. I just can’t tell you that there’s any reason to expect that to happen for sure right now.

Marquette is 1-0 all time against Mississippi Valley State. Now, the catch here is that the official record book just says the game happened on November 12th and doesn’t list a year…… AND the CTRL-F search for Mississippi V turns up just the one result. The search for nov. 12 turns up the 2011-12 opener, a 69-61 win in Milwaukee. Oh, man, remember when we used to have to wait until November 12th for the season to start?
Well, let’s start here. Mississippi Valley State hasn’t won 10 games in a season since 2016-17. They went 10-20 that year, and that was the first time they had won 10 games since their last winning season. That was a 17-15 campaign in 2012-13. Hey, that means that MVSU was pretty good when Marquette beat them back in November 2011! They went 14-4 in the SWAC that year!
Things are so bad for MVSU that their Sports Reference page just completely missed the fact that Jason James was named interim head coach on December 13, 2024 and he was given the full time job on April 28, 2025, making this his second full season in charge now. I get still listing Kimberly Anderson as head coach for 2024-25…. but y’all missed all of last season and haven’t caught up on this season yet. Is the problem that MVSU doesn’t actually have a press release for the interim situation on their website? Maybe!
As for this year, BartTorvik.com projects the Delta Devils to finish eighth in the 12 team SWAC this season. That’s better than the actual SWAC preseason poll, which has MVSU coming in at 11th out of 12. Part of this is because Mississippi Valley State brings back just one of their top eight scorers from a year ago. That’s Sydnei Marshall, who was #2 on the team with 9.2 points per game, and in case you were wondering, no, they did not have any double digit scorers. The Delta Devils are also replacing their top five rebounders and don’t return anyone who averaged more than 1.5 assists per game, either.
MVSU is doing a weird thing where they are calling their 81-67 win over Tougaloo College back on Thursday their “season opener” even though that’s clearly an exhibition game both by way of timing (it was before Monday) and the fact that they’re not even counting it as a win on their schedule page where they are still 0-0 this year. The 5’9” Marshall led the squad in scoring there, shooting 7-for-10 from the field to get to 18 points. She also had four rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and three steals, so that’s a lot to watch out for there. Joyce Mulumba had nine rebounds in 15 foul plagued minutes as a starter to lead the team in that department, and I’Xana Winters had six assists in 29 minutes off the bench to end up as the top distributor. MVSU was trailing 14-8 at the end of the first quarter there and didn’t take a lead until nearly midway through the second. They also went 0-for-11 from behind the three-point line, so that might be a notable flaw to watch.
