Bayern Munich prepares to take on Atalanta in the Champions League Round of 16, with the winner of the tie getting either Real Madrid or Manchester City in the next round. Bayern executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is somehow rooting for both teams.
“I hope my friend Pep Guardiola advances, but I’ve always had big respect for Real Madrid in the second half of the season,” the 70-year-old said (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “Usually, from February onwards, we’ve seen a different Real Madrid. And
now it seems the same to me; they haven’t had a great season so far, but now when the decisive matches come around, we’ll see how they turn up – Real Madrid will remain Real Madrid.”
Either team would set up an interesting match should Bayern advance, because the Bavarians have a bone to pick with both teams: Man City for 2023 and Madrid for all those years of pain. The Rekordmeister is much better than the iterations of their teams that last faced the two European heavyweights, but a win isn’t guaranteed and it must be proven against Atalanta.
